Vikaas - A livelihood enablement app for Gaindi Khata, Uttarakhand

Vikaas, which means "development," is a real-time collaboration platform that connects villagers living in rural India with Subject Matter Experts (SME) from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Pradhans (their local administrative heads), and Government officials. It facilitates the seamless sharing of information and expert advice on a common platform for all.

The app was developed under the mentorship and guidance of renowned Prof. Vivek Kumar from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. It was launched in Gaindi Khata, a village cluster comprising 25 villages and a population of 25,000 residents, located in the Haridwar district of the Uttarakhand State in India. This initiative was carried out as part of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan, a program initiated by the Government of India.
Vikaas offers a seamless, user-friendly interface that enables villagers to easily interact with SMEs by asking questions, seeking advice, or sharing their experiences. In turn, SMEs can respond to these inquiries, provide valuable insights, and offer practical solutions. These responses can then be broadcasted to the entire hyperlocal community through the app.

Another key feature of Vikaas is the categorization of SMEs into specific queues. These queues have been created based on several topics and domains that are relevant to the villagers' needs. For instance, there might be queues dedicated to topics like mushroom or corn farming, stubble disposal, organic farming, animal husbandry, government schemes, weather forecasts, women empowerment and more. Villagers can browse through these queues to find SMEs who specialize in the areas they seek personalized assistance with, and then they can raise queries using audio, video, and vernacular language interface tools.

Each query can be directed to the specific SME through the village Pradhans, and the broadcasted response can be viewed by all villagers in that village. Pradhans can also send out broadcast messages, such as alerts about impending natural calamities, invitations to community events such as employment or health camps, cultural events, and information about new government schemes. With a single broadcast message, all villagers receive the same information instantly.
Vikaas incorporates user roles to ensure efficient management and the smooth operation of the app. The App Admin oversees the overall functioning of the app, maintains its integrity, and ensures the privacy and confidentiality of all users' information. This knowledge sharing and collaboration among villagers, SMEs, and Pradhans fosters a sense of community and encourages the exchange of knowledge and expertise, with Pradhans playing a vital role in facilitating this engagement at the grassroots level.
Interface & Functionality
Designed with user-friendliness at its core, Vikaas offers the following features:

Categorized Queues: It offers tailored queues based on various domains, ranging from agriculture to government schemes, ensuring targeted and relevant interactions.

Broad & Personal Interactions: SMEs can broadcast advice and information to the entire community, but there's also space for one-on-one interactions when needed.

Empowering the Pradhans: Pradhans, who play central roles in villages, are equipped to broadcast essential information, whether it's about impending natural calamities or community events.
Impact & Future Aspirations
Vikaas aims to be more than just a tool; it aspires to be an agent of change. As the app takes root in the Gaindi Khata village cluster, we envision a ripple effect, with knowledge being disseminated, skills enhanced, and rural India moving towards a brighter, more informed future.
